The United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres in his message on the World Radio Day celebrated every year on 13th of February said radio has the widest reach across the world and is thus a powerful tool to unite and empower communities.
This year the World Radio Day is celebrated under the theme “Radio and Sports”. Guterres said both radio and sports are ways of helping people achieve their full potential.
He added the even with advancing technologies, radio continues to retain its power to entertain, educate, inform and inspire.
South Sudan also joined the rest of the world in commemorating the World Radio Day with support of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the participation of radio stations in Juba.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, the Station Manager of Eye Radio Koang Pal Chang urged media houses and especially radio stations to use the platform for spreading peace among South Sudanese communities.
Pal admitted that the media environment in South Sudan remains hostile and the economic crisis across the country has led to the closure of many radio stations.
"We appeal to the authorities to respect the press and press freedom laws in South Sudan and to facilitate the work of journalists," he added.
