The government of South Sudan’s Jonglei State on Monday suspended public transport on the Juba-Bor road after it had allegedly spotted unusual movement of unknown gunmen.

The Governor of Jonglei State Philip Aguer told Radio Tamazuj this morning that the people of the state should take precautionary measures when using the road.

“Any convoy must seek security approval from the military before moving to Juba.  If there is no permission from the military in Mangala and Magiri then they should not move,” said Aguer.

Governor Aguer assured the public that the main road between Juba and Bor will reopen soon.

For his part, Majok Jok Reng, Chairperson of Drivers’ Union in Jonglei, said the government should instead provide military escorts.

“Yes, we welcome the move but the military should offer escorts because driving is the only source of income for us,” Majok added.

In May, The state government suspended public transport on the Juba-Bor road after deadly attack that left at least 30 dead. But the public transports resumed operations after the security situation returned to normal.
