Protests in Sudan’s Northern state over dam construction

Citizens from the Abari area in Wadi Halfa in Sudan’s Northern State protested Saturday against the construction of Kajbar and Dali dams.

Citizens from the Abari area in Wadi Halfa in Sudan’s Northern State protested Saturday against the construction of Kajbar and Dali dams.

Salah Abdul Rahaman, one of the protesters, said the protest began from Abari new club with citizens from around 26 villages carrying signs written “Abud tragedy will not repeat itself,” referring to the displacement of populations during the construction of Aswan High dam.

He added that the protest stopped at Abari market to listen to a speech by Dal dam opponents committee chairman Adel Abdul Aziz who reaffirmed their rejection to the construction of dams.

The protesters have called on the presidency to issue a degree for the cancellation of construction of these dams.

Dal dam is located in the Nile’s second cataract, while Kajbar dam located on the third cataract.

Sudan’s parliament recently endorsed a framework agreement signed with Saudi Arabia to build the two dams despite objections from some of the local population.
