The administration of the University of Peace in South Kordofan have indefinitely terminated studies within their faculty of petroleum studies, based in al-Mujlad town, following student protests on Tuesday.
The protests, carried out by students from the college on Tuesday resulted in intervention by the police and government-affiliated militias who broke them up using tear gas.
A number of students were reportedly injured or fainted due to the excessive use of tear gas as they protested in front of Dean’s office to demanda better qualified dean and faculty.
Calling for faculty members with university degrees in science, they also protested for the rehabilitation of the college infrastructure.
The college is a relatively recently established institution in which student could work towards a bachelor’s or master’s degree in one of its three departments: oil refinery, production or detection.
Three deans had managed the college over the course of one academic year, the seat currently sitting vacant after the most recent was dismissed last month.
