Protest against detention of journalist in Sudan’s capital

About a hundred Sudanese journalists staged a protest in front of the National Press and Publications Council in Khartoum on Monday.

Journalist Khaled Saad said that they decided on the protest in solidarity with El Nur Ahmed El Nur, a journalist working for the London-based Arabic newspaper El Hayat in Khartoum, who was detained by security officers on Thursday.

The journalist had recently reported about the National Electricity Corporation.

The protesters demanded El Nur’s immediate release. Family members of El Nur participated in the protest.

They submitted a memorandum to the director of the National Press and Publications Council, Ali Shumu, in which they condemned the continuous interventions by the security apparatus in the newspapers’ publication policies, and the repeated confiscations of print-runs.
