Dozens of ruling National Congress Party (NCP) members attending the General Convention reportedly fell ill after eating suspected spoiled meat on Thursday.

The members were taken to the police hospital near the venue of the Fourth General Conference in the capital Khartoum, while an investigation committee was immediately formed to investigate the matter.

Nearly 6,000 party members are participating in the convention, which will conclude next Saturday where the party leader will be elected.

A source close to the party indicated that between 20 to 30 members coming from the states were poisoned after eating one of the meals served in the convention.

For its part, the organizing committee took measures to determine where the problem occurred and how to address it immediately.

The organizing committee reassured that the health conditions of the members who had suffered from poisoning meal were stable after receiving medical treatment, according to the same source.

For his part, the chairman of the Services Committee at the General Convention said that the cases did not exceed ten party members. He added that they received good treatment and left to their places of residence.
