A 25-year-old man was on Sunday killed in what a local official said was a suspected revenge attack at the Mayiendit County Prison in Unity State.

The deceased, Gattot Mathiang Phar, was detained at the facility for illegally possessing a gun.

Michael Gatgueng, the acting commissioner of Mayiendit County, told Radio Tamazuj that the deceased Mathiang was killed inside the prison located in Rukuach Payam on Sunday evening.

“The incident happened at 6:30 pm on Sunday when an assailant entered the prison, attacked this young man who was inside the prison, and shot him dead in what we suspect to be a revenge attack,” he said.

The acting commissioner said three suspects had been detained in connection to the murder and that an investigation will be launched into the killing.

“I arrested all the security personnel including the county police director general who is suspected to be part of the attack and they are now being investigated over the incident,” Gatgueng added.

He condemned the attack and urged the deceased’s relatives to remain calm and allow authorities to handle the matter legally.
