Sudan’s National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) on Tuesday confiscated the print-runs of four daily newspapers in an attempt to crackdown on coverage of anti-austerity protests.

Protests erupted earlier this month after Sudan government introduced austerity measures including fuel and electricity subsidy cuts.

Osman Merghani, editor-in-chief of Al-Tayar newspaper, told Radio Tamazuj yesterday that security officers stopped the distribution of Al-Tayar, Al-Jareeda, Al-Ayam and Al-Youm Al-Tali newspapers without any clear reasons.

Osman pointed out that the likely reason is the newspaper’s coverage of the calls for civil disobedience across the country, while predicting closure of more newspapers.

Merghani affirmed that the civil disobedience managed to achieve its objectives because the people of Sudan expressed their opinion. He explained that the civil disobedience will have a significant impact if citizens unite their ranks
