About 955 primary school teachers in Jonglei state on Wednesday received an incentive of $40 each for the months of May and June under the European Union IMPACT programme.
The EU program strives to assist every primary school in South Sudan to enable their teachers sustain the social fabric.
Jonglei’s Minister of Education, Ayom Mach Jok, said that the newly introduced scheme will motivate the teachers who were about to leave the profession due to poor pay.
“The state ministry of education, gender and social welfare is launching the European Union IMPACT programme which aims to promote the retention of primary school teachers in the schools and to ensure they are in classrooms teaching,”he said.
Jacob Nhial, a teacher at St. Andrew, a faith-based primary school in Bor, said that the new salary will boost their moral and would greatly impact their lives.
Thiong John Majok a head teacher in Bor, applauded the European Union and said he will double his efforts.
Milton Adah, a representative of an organization implementing the EU IMPACT programme in the state encouraged teachers left out by the program to keep working and be hopeful.
