Prices of essential commodities have significantly dropped at the markets in South Sudan’s Northern Bahr el Ghazal state as the state has been witnessing relative stability, according the state chamber of commerce.
Garang Athian, the head of the Chamber of Commerce in Northern Bahr el Ghazal, told Radio Tamazuj on Monday that all foodstuffs are available at the markets at stable prices.
He said that most of the goods come from Sudan.
“A sack of sugar is for 430 SSP and a small bushel of sorghum dropped to 13 SSP,” one of the traders told Radio Tamazuj.
When asked about the alleged theft of shops at the markets in Northern Bahr el Ghazal last month, the official admitted that there were thefts from 32 shops within a month.
Hoewever, he claimed that the security has been restored after the authorities deployed security forces around the market.
Garang further revealed that the Sudanese traders are facing challenges in Meiram area, claiming they are still paying money to bandits so that they are allowed to reach South Sudan and Northern Bahr el Ghazal.
In June, Sudanese traders complained about unauthorized taxes collected by armed Arab militias along the Meiram-Majok Nyinthiou route into the state.
