Prices of essential commodities have shot up at the market in Renk town in South Sudan’s northern Upper Nile State, locals said.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, several local traders said the rise in prices is due to deteriorating economic situation.
They also complained about declining purchase power of the population, pointing out that there was not enough money from the locals.
“The price of a pound of sugar has increased from costs 110 SSP to 140 SSP, and 1 pound of milk has increase from 30 SSP to 60 SSP, while a kilogram of lamb meat has risen from 7,000 SSP to 1,000 SSP,” one trader said.
Paul Chol, a local trader, said the government has been imposing heavy taxes on their goods.
Ajieng Ayuel, a local resident, accused of the government of failing to control the prices at the market.
Fathiya Al-Hajj, a government employee in Renk, the current economic situation will force families not to send their children to school.
