The prices of food and other commodities have dropped in the main city in the Bahr al Ghazal region of South Sudan after some key roads were repaired, allowing lorries to reach the town.
Natale Paul Mere, the Secretary General for the State Chamber of Commerce in Wau says prices stabilized with the improvement of the roads linking Wau to Rumbek and Wau to Tombura.
Speaking to Radio Miraya, he said, “By the end of August there was a 20 per cent drop in prices. A bag of flour was 300 South Sudanese Pounds (SSP), then went down to 280 SSP and now ranges between 240 SSP to 230 SSP.”
He added that sugar and diesel prices have also dropped. The official attributed the price changes to road maintenance work between Rumbek and Mapel.
Also in Wau it is reported that traffic police have confiscated more than 100 motorcycles in a crackdown on unlicensed motorcyclists. The police are pressuring owners to obtain licenses and insurance.
