Press release: Clarification on Greater Pibor Area

The Akobo Anyuak Community leadership would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Gen Salva Kiir Mayardit, the President of the Republic for the recently signed Peace Agreement between the government and South Sudan Democratic Movement/Army (SSDM/A) Cobra Faction of Gen. David Yau Yau, which paves the way for the establishment of Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA).

We also congratulate the President for signing a Ceasefire Agreement with Dr Riek Machar Teny, the leader of SPLM/A In opposition in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Furthermore, we would like to clarify to all South Sudanese communities and the general public that the Anyuak tribe lives in Akobo and Pochalla Counties in Jonglie State of South Sudan, and we the Anyuak community of Akobo County, a section of the Anyuak tribe, want to clarify that we are not part and parcel of GPAA.

We are geographically, politically and administratively a distinct section of the Anyuak community living in former Akobo district, the current Akobo County.

Thus, as Anyuak community of Pochalla County and Murle tribe of Pibor County celebrates the signing of Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) Agreement, it should be known to the public that the GPAA is only for the Murle tribe of Pibor County, Anyuak community of Pochalla County, the Jiye and the Suri (Kacipo) of Boma Payam of Pibor County, excluding Anyuak community of Akobo County.

Once again, we want to wish President Salva Kiir Mayardiit, our best wishes and prayers for peace and prosperity to come to our country.
