The head of the Sudanese Journalists Syndicate has said that press freedom was among the first casualties of the ongoing war which started on 15 April 2023.

Abdel Moneim told Radio Tamazuj that media institutions are facing widespread destruction, looting, and cessation of operations, especially in conflict areas.

“The destruction of media institutions has led to many journalists losing their jobs and deprived Sudanese citizens of access to information, making them vulnerable to the spread of false news and hate speech on social media,” he said.

Moneim noted that journalists’ movements and media practitioners in areas controlled by either side of warring parties are harassed, arrested, and assaulted, severely restricting their ability to operate.

In response, a Sudanese journalist, Nasr al-Din Abdel Qader, expressed his sorrow and pain over the suffering of journalists worldwide who are being oppressed and silenced.
