Press freedom: Alfred Taban held without charge, released on bail

Juba Monitor editor Alfred Taban was released on bail Thursday after being held by police without charge.

Juba Monitor editor Alfred Taban was released on bail Thursday after being held by police without charge.

Police had summoned Taban because the current Minister of Health wanted to sue the veteran editor, another journalist said.

The Juba Monitor recently published a comment that included accusations against the ministry by a former official.

It is unclear why Taban had to post bail as there were no official charges leveled against him.

Since the beginning of the civil war, national security has repeatedly confiscated print editions of the Juba Monitor and summoned journalists for questioning.
