South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit left for Addis Ababa Friday to attend the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) summit, which is to discuss the situation in South Sudan and Somalia.
President Kiir was seen off at Juba Airport by the First Vice President Taban Deng Gai and a number of cabinet ministers and top military officers.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj today, Ateny Wek Ateny, South Sudan’s presidential spokesman, said that the IGAD summit will be an opportunity for President Kiir to brief his counterparts in the region on the current situation in South Sudan.
He pointed out that President Kiir will also discuss the African Union’s decision to send 4,000 regional forces to the capital Juba, besides the countries that will contribute troops.
“The summit will be an opportunity for the President to clarify the position of the government during the meeting with his counterparts, he will talk about the countries that will contribute troops and the security situation, besides the implementation of the peace agreement,”said Ateny.
