President Salva Kiir has granted amnesty to leaders of holdout rebel groups two weeks after signing a truce agreement in the latest effort to push for peace.

President Salva Kiir has granted amnesty to leaders of holdout rebel groups two weeks after signing a truce agreement in the latest effort to push for peace.

The South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation reported the announcement by President Salva Kiir in Juba on Tuesday.

South Sudan Opposition Movements Alliance (SSOMA), a coalition of nine opposition groups that did not join the 2018 peace agreement, signed a truce agreement with the government of President Salva Kiir in Rome, Italy on 12 January.

This came following a meeting hosted and mediated by the Rome-based Sant’ Egidio Community.

Paul Malong, Thomas Cirillo and Pa’gan Amum are the prominent leaders of the holdout opposition groups.

Thomas Cirillo is heading the National Salvation Front, while Paul Malong is the head of South Sudan United Front. The SPLM Party’s former secretary general, Pa’gan Amum is leading the Real Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (R-SPLM).
