A senior government official said talks between President Kiir’s and Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi in Cairo focused on bilateral relations between the countries.

Speaking to reporters at Juba Airport upon President Kiir’s arrival on Wednesday, Mayiik Ayii Deng, Minister in the Office of the President descried the relations between South Sudan and Egypt as “historical”.

The official commended the support provided by Egypt to South Sudan in different fields. Mayiik pointed out that President Kiir thanked President Sisi for the role played by Egypt to fail the UN resolution to impose an arms embargo on South Sudan.

He denied reports that the two countries signed a security deal, saying they agreed to consolidate trade relations between the two countries.

For his part, Lado Lokaka, deputy head of commerce chamber and member of the government delegation to Egypt, described the visit as “successful”.

He noted that their delegation met with a number of Egyptian investors and discussed the possibility of investment in South Sudan. “We met with businessmen there, we met with suppliers and local traders, we met and discussed the issues of food items, building materials, oil and cars,” he said.

However, Lokak pointed out that the investors expressed concerns about the security situation in South Sudan. The South Sudanese businessman emphasized the importance of peace and stability in the country.
