South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir on Monday assented to six critical legislations, marking a milestone in the South Sudan reform agenda.
The six are:
1-The Tourism Act 2024
2-Public Financial Management and Accountability Act 2011 (Amended 2024)
3-National Bureau of Statistics Act
4-Commission for Truth, Reconciliation and Healing Act 2024
5-Civil Aviation Authority Act 2012 (Amendment Act 2024)
6-Compensation and Reparations Authority Act 2024.
Justice Minister Ruben Madol Arol Kachuol, who presented the bills to the President, expressed gratitude for their smooth passage, which followed extensive consultations.
The Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), Edmund Yakani, said the signing of the law for the establishment of the Commission for Truth, Reconciliation and Healing by the President is a milestone for securing transitional justice.
Yakani said transitional justice is key to the transition from violence to political stability.
He urged President Kiir to speed up the establishment of the Commission for Truth, Reconciliation and Healing before December 2024 and the Compensation and Reparations Authority Act 2024.
“The CTHR and CRA should be administered by leaders who are non-partisan and not engaged in any form of human rights abuse or corruption. The appointment of the commissioners should be transparent, including proper parliament deliberations,” Yakani stressed
“CEPO appreciates the President for signing into law the Tourism Act 2024, Public Financial Management and Accountability Act 2011 (Amendment Act 2024), National Bureau of Statistics Act 2018 (Amendment Act 2024) and Civil Aviation Authority Act 2012 (Amendment Act 2024),” he concluded.
