President Bashir dismisses Sudan’s Abyei co-chair

Sudan’s president Omar Hassan al-Bashir issued a presidential decree removing the Sudanese co-chair of the Abyei Joint Oversight Committee (AJOC) al-Khair al-Fahim al-Mekki and replacing him with Hassan Ali Nemir.

Sudan’s president Omar Hassan al-Bashir issued a presidential decree removing the Sudanese co-chair of the Abyei Joint Oversight Committee (AJOC) al-Khair al-Fahim al-Mekki and replacing him with Hassan Ali Nemir.

Hassan Ali had served as West Kordofan State Minister of Agriculture. The decree gave no reasons for the dismissal of al-Khair al-Fahim, Al Jareeda newspaper reported yesterday.

Al-Khair Al-Fahim is a prominent member of the National Congress Party and a member of the Misseriya Arab tribe. His time in office was marred by deep tribal differences between the Misseriya and Ngok Dinka tribes in the contested area of Abyei between the two Sudans.
