Pregant women and mothers malnourished in Yida camp

Pregnant women and mothers of young children displaced from South Kordofan are facing food shortages in Yida refugee camp over the border in South Sudan.

Camp activists appealed to humanitarian organisations to urgently provide the women with food.

The situation of these women is dangerous and the food available is not enough for pregnant and breastfeeding women to produce milk for their babies, said Hafsa Idris to Radio Tamazuj.

The former UN official Mukesh Kapila visited Yida camp last week to assess conditions amongst refugees.

The humanitarian situation is disasterous especially amongst women and children, I saw the effects of hunger on people's bodies which are severely wasting away, said Kapila to Radio Tamazuj.

The lack of food for pregnant women makes them vulnerable to miscarriages, children suffering from malnutrition are also vulnerable to diseases, added Kapila.
