The National Pre-Transitional Committee (NPTC), a body tasked with the oversight and implementation of the activities of the pre-transitional period held its first meeting on Sunday in Khartoum.

The members of the committee were supposed to meet in Khartoum on 14 October but due to logistical challenges, the meeting was postponed to 21 October.

According to a statement seen by Radio Tamazuj, the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission JMEC Deputy Chairperson Ambassador Lt. Gen. Augostino Njoroge urged the committee to constructively engage the people of South Sudan for effective and inclusive implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.

The reconstitution of the NPTC and the convening of its first meeting heralds very positive news for the people of South Sudan who are eagerly waiting to see the agreement implemented in letter and spirit,” Njoroge is quoted as saying.

Ambassador Njoroge urged the Committee to develop “an effective and transparent mechanism” to involve regional and international actors.

"I would like to draw the attention of the Committee members to the need to look carefully at the financial requirements for the revitalized peace agreement, institutions and mechanisms. Experience has shown that a failure to secure the requisite financing for such crucial institutions can severely undermine and ultimately stall implementation,” he added.

The committee is made up of 5 members from the Transitional Government of National Unity, 2 from the SPLM/A In Opposition, 1 member of the South Sudan Opposition Alliance, 1 member of the Former Detainees and 1 member of Other Political Parties.

The IGAD Special Envoy for South Sudan Ambassador Dr. Ismail Wais and Sudan Special Envoy for South Sudan, Ambassador Jamal al-Sheikh attended the meeting.
