The Red Sea State Narcotics Control Department announced the seizure of 2 kilograms of heroin from an individual in their possession.

The Red Sea State Narcotics Control Department announced the seizure of 2 kilograms of heroin from an individual in their possession.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, the police press office confirmed that, as part of their regular efforts to combat drug trafficking in the state’s localities, a suspect was apprehended with 2 kilos of heroin.

Further investigations by the police press office revealed information regarding a person involved in promoting and selling drugs in the city of Sawakin.

A specialized field team was deployed, and after surveillance and investigation, the suspect was arrested with the illicit substance, along with a sum of money, a motorcycle, and mobile phones.

A case was filed with the jurisdictional department and appropriate legal actions were taken.

Sudan’s 2021 report to the UN on the spread of drugs in the country for instance mentioned that the smuggling of heroin, which used to be confined to Sudanese airports, has shifted to Red Sea ports. Ships are being used more and more to smuggle large quantities of heroin into the country, the report said.

Other drugs were smuggled into Sudan over sea much earlier, whereby allegedly also officials were involved.
