Poor road conditions in Twic East County of Jonglei State are reportedly hindering medical teams from educating citizens on the risks of South Sudan’s cholera outbreak.

Twic East Commissioner Dau Akuei Jorkuch told Radio Tamazuj that the county has not yet recorded suspected cases of the outbreak.

He said they had planned to educate the citizens on how to put precautionary measures in place to avoid he outbreak in remote payams, but are having trouble because of a lack of qualified medical teams and bad roads.

He called on health organizations operating in the area to transport medical teams by air to the remote peripheral areas.

Last week, the Minister of Health in Jonglei State told Radio Tamazuj that Bor Hospital received 19 cholera cases. The minister complained about challenges facing them in controlling the outbreak in the state.

South Sudan’s ministry of health declared a cholera outbreak on 23 June, more than three weeks after the first case was discovered. Over 700 people are affected so far with at least 32 deaths.
