Students at the Education College in Sinja of Sudan’s Sennar University organized peaceful protests over flooding and poor sanitation in their dormitories on Tuesday, according to political activist Saad Mohamed.
Mohamed expressed concern that this tension could result in larger clashes after students apparently exchanged tense words with their supervisors.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, Saad said several female students expressed discontent about accumulation of floodwater and growth of grasses in their dormitory area, while the administration was doing nothing. He added that about six rooms have been submerged with water.
“The protesting students become furious especially after the administration accused them of having links with opposition political parties and that they were incited to do so,” he said.
The activist pointed out that the protesting girls in a rally organized at the university campus on Wednesday were chanting and holding pictures of political detainees including the SCP leader Ibrahim al-Sheikh.
He said the administration tried to deescalate the situation by emptying a library for the affected students until the problem is solved, but they turned down the offer, saying the library is meant for education purposes and not as a place to sleep.
However, the faculty is working normally uninterrupted, according to the same source.
In March, students at the University of Sennar went on strike following dismissal of over 200 students by the university administration following tensions caused by the release of examinations results in the faculty of education.
