US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is to visit the Sudanese capital Khartoum in the coming days, US officials said on Sunday.
Pompeo will meet Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and the head of ruling Sovereign Council, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
Pompeo arrived in Israel on Monday and will also visit Bahrain and the UAE as part of a five-day tour.
“In Sudan, the secretary will meet with Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and Sovereign Council Chair General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan to discuss continued US support for the civilian-led transitional government, and express support for deepening the Sudan-Israel relationship,” a State Department statement said.
Sudan’s transitional government has been normalizing relations with the United States since the overthrow of former president Omar al-Bashir in April 2019 but is still seeking removal from a list of countries the US considers as state sponsors of terrorism.
The terrorism listing dates to 1993 and makes Sudan technically ineligible for debt relief and financing from international lenders.
