A polio vaccination campaign reached 13,480 children at Yida camp in South Sudan, targeting children up to five years old
The effort was supposed to continue to cover the entire camp but was stopped due to lack of budget for vaccination workers, with the number of children not covered about 1500.
CARE organization carried out the vaccination effort in coordination with the UN Refugee Agency. Reportedly there were about fifty cases of polio found among children and ten cases of polio found in adults.
Two cases of yellow fever were also reported in two girls in the camp.
The vaccination effort was carried out over ten days by twenty workers. The process usually began at 7:00 in the morning and continued until evening.
But on the fifth day the workers complained of low pay and lack of meals from the organization during the working hours. Workers said they did not expect to resume vaccination of the rest of the children.
