A policeman was killed during clashes with cattle raiders in Paluony Payam of Uror County in Jonglei State on Monday, a local official said.
Machot Gatluak Kenyjak, the Uror County commissioner, told Radio Tamazuj Wednesday that the deceased, identified as Sergeant Dama Yol, was leading a troop of policemen dispatched to recover cattle stolen by raiders from Ayod County.
“Some criminals from my county went and stole some cattle from Ayod. The cattle owner pursued the raiders and reported the issue to the police, who then followed and intercepted the raiders in the outskirts of Paluony,” he said. “There, they clashed, leaving one of our officers dead. All the cattle were recovered.”
Commissioner Gatluak added that an investigation had been launched, but suspects had not yet been apprehended.
Major Majak Daniel Tuor, the state police spokesperson, said he had not yet received a report about the incident.
