A policeman blew himself up with a hand grenade in Rumbek town of South Sudan’s Lakes State, killing himself and wounding six family members, including his father.
State Police Spokesman Major Elijah Mabor told Radio Tamazuj Friday that the incident occurred on Wednesday at 10:00 p.m. He identified the policeman who killed himself and injured family members as Sergeant Wade Makuac.
“According to our information, the policeman came home while drunk. His father challenged him by accusing him of having consumed the salary by drinking alcohol while leaving the children suffering,” he said.
“The late Makuach was on a queue of salaries for almost two days. As you know, the line is very long, and he did not manage to get his salary. He was waiting to receive his salary, but after he returned home drunk, the family thought he had received the salary,” he added.
The police spokesman further said thorough investigations into the incident are underway.
“We don’t know, but what we know generally is that those who used to drink alcohol are friendly. Even if you don’t have money, you can drink with friends,” he explained.
A family member could not mediately be reached for comment.
