The authorities in Lakes State have confirmed that they are investigating police brutality in Yirol West County and the recent torture of an influential local chief from Yirol East County at the Maburzeet Prison.

The chief, identified as Andrew Madut Buoi, is said to have been summoned for allegedly felling mahogany trees illegally and tortured upon his arrival at the notorious Maburzeet detention facility in Yirol West County by policemen on Sunday.

The acting governor of Lakes State, Poth Madit Dut, told Radio Tamazuj Monday that he had ordered an investigation into the manhandling and torture of Chief Madut Buoi.

“The information we got from the ground confirmed that  Chief Andrew Madut Buoi has been tortured by the soldiers in Maburzeet,” he said. “I immediately ordered an investigation into the cause of his torture and it is the investigation that will tell us the reason for his torture by the soldiers.”

He said the torturing of sultan Madut Buoi was unfortunate.

Meanwhile, the clinical officer in charge of Yirol Hospital, Angelina Adut Agol, confirmed that the chief was brutally tortured and is admitted to the health facility.

She said that Chief Madut has severe bruises all over his body and face and was given normal saline through an intravenous drip and antibiotics and that he was stable.

“He was unconscious when he was brought to Yirol Hospital. We put him on normal saline and gave him some injections. We were worried about his organs and internal bleeding so we scanned all his organs this morning (Monday) and they are normal,” she said. “No organ was damaged during the beating but he sustained serious wounds on the face and other parts of his body.”

According to Adut, the chief will most likely be discharged on Tuesday and continue medication from home.

On his part, Chief Madut’s son, Makur Madut Buoi, said the medical personnel at Yirol Hospital stabilized his father who he said sustained serious injuries including a damaged right eye.

“My father was summoned to Yirol West County while he was in Pagarau Payam of Yirol East County. Upon his arrival at Maburzeet, A soldier identified as Captain Makuei Chieny, beat my father using a gun until he became unconscious and was brought here to Yirol West County hospital,” he said.

According to Makur, the torture of his father resulted from the cutting of mahogany trees.

“My father has a valid registered legal license from the ministry of forestry which authorized him to cut mahogany trees in Yirol East County as timbers for his house,” he said.
