Traders in South Sudan’s proposed Eastern Nile State say that police have recovered stolen goods in Paloich town but they also beat traders who called on them to restore to them the stolen goods.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, a trader from the area said his shop was looted among other shops but the police managed to arrest the culprits with the goods.

The trader said his money amounting to more than 500,000 SSP was stolen with the goods. “I am a trader and have some shops in Bunj, Paloich and Renk. 13 jerrycans of cooking oil, 14 jerrycans of diesel, 10 sacks of sugar, 15 sacks of flour and 500,000 SSP have been stolen from my shop in Renk. The police arrested the culprits who acknowledge that they stole these items and then the police took them to the station in Paloich,” he said.

The trader who preferred not to be named added, “I sent my younger brothers to the police station to find out but they were beaten by the police and put in a cell and they refused to give me my stolen goods.”

He called on the state government to intervene in order to recover his goods that the police have seized.
