Police protest unpaid wages in Aweil, market closed

Aweil market in South Sudan’s Northern Bahr el Ghazal state closed this morning when a group of police forces protested a delay in the payment of their salaries.

Aweil market in South Sudan’s Northern Bahr el Ghazal state closed this morning when a group of police forces protested a delay in the payment of their salaries.

Multiple sources told Radio Tamazuj that a group of police staged a strike in Aweil and ordered traders to close the market on Monday. They added the police were demanding February and March salaries.

For his part, Mariing Deng, State Police Commissioner, confirmed the incident. However, Mariing told Radio Tamazuj that the protesting police didn’t inform the leadership about their move in the area.

The police commissioner criticized the group that ordered the closure of shops, saying they dispatched elements from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to prosecute those who caused chaos in the market.

He pointed out that the traders have nothing to do with the delayed salaries.
