The police in Aweil, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State have apprehended a man suspected of killing a Sudanese trader in a road ambush along the Aweil-Mairam road.

On 22 January, a Sudanese trader was killed in the War-Guet area of Aweil East County while he was on his way to Mairam. The Aweil-Mairam road resumed activities in December last year after eight months of closure over insecurity as bandits from Dinka Malual and Misseriya destabilized the border communities.

Aweil East County police commissioner Deng Chier confirmed that the suspect has been apprehended and that the joint border peace committees between the Dinka Malual and the Misseriya are doing their best to resolve the matter peacefully.

“That trader was killed on War-Guet road and his case is with the people of peace committees between Dinka Malual and Misseriya. The suspect was arrested and was taken to Aweil. It is the government who arrested him last Friday. The situation is calm at the moment,’’ said Deng.

Deng Deng Akuei, the peace coordinator in Aweil East, said the motive behind the killing is not yet known but investigations are on-going.

For his part, the Aweil East County Executive Director, Abraham Wiik Awan urged the Sudanese traders operating in the area to carry out their business activities and assured them of full security, saying that the government will put perpetrators behind bars.
