The police in Malakal town of Upper Nile State have launched an investigation into the death of a South Sudanese man who was killed and dumped near the internally displaced camp formerly known as UN Protection of Civilian Site (PoC).

Reports from the camp indicate that the late went missing a week before he was found dead.

The body of late Kuol John Chol, age 38, a builder by profession, was found lying near the IDPs camp on Sunday, with hands tied using his belt.

Major General Achol Atem, the Upper Nile State Police Commissioner in Malakal town told Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday that they have set up a joint investigating committee including the community policing inside the UN camp to probe the death of the man.

“We are asking the people in the camp when this person left the camp, who did he leave the camp with to the town,” Atem said.

He added, “We received information where someone called from UN camp saying there is someone lost and he is at the church, which was not so clear and now after the incident, we are now looking for that guy who had called us because he might have got enough information.”

The police official said it was the first time since the year began to experience such an incident since 2019. Radio Tamazuj was unable to reach the family of the deceased for comment.
