The police in the Jonglei State capital, Bor, have launched an investigation into the disappearance of a baby who was allegedly stolen from her mother’s bedside from the maternity ward at Bor State Hospital.
General Elia Kosta Faustino, the Jonglei State police commissioner told Radio Tamazuj that the mother left the baby and went out to fetch drinking water only to return to discover that her baby missing a few minutes later.
“On 12 January 2024 at 1 p.m., there was a woman with her child a baby girl who is 9 days old in the hospital. She left the baby in the room and went to bring water. During her absence, the child disappeared.” he explained. “When she came back, she found that the child was not there. The people started looking for the child, but they failed to get her until now.”
According to Gen. Kosta, a criminal case has been opened against the unknown suspect, and police and other state security agents have been alerted to search for the suspect.
“We informed our CID personnel plus national security and all organized forces,” he said. “We informed all the people at the checkpoints to search for the child.”
The police chief appealed to the public to cooperate with the police and provide any information that could help them find the baby and reunite her with the mother.
For his part, the director of Bor State Hospital, Dr. Bol Chau, confirmed the incident and said the hospital was deeply saddened and concerned.
“The incident took place on Friday. It is very unfortunate,” he stated. “This is the first of its kind, no child has gone missing at Bor State Hospital before.”
Dr. Chau said the health officials are cooperating with the police and providing them with all the necessary support, adding that the hospital would review its security protocols and take necessary actions to prevent such incidents from happening again.
