The police in Bor town, the capital of Jonglei State have launched a crackdown on gang members commonly known as 'niggers' amidst rising gang violence in parts of the town.

The state police spokesperson, Major Majak Daniel Tuor, told Radio Tamazuj that the ongoing exercise will continue until the gang violence is contained.

“This issue of gangs known as niggers has started again terrorizing the residents in the town. Last week, they attacked a boda-boda guy stabbing him in the arm. So, as the police, we embarked on daytime and nighttime patrol to combat them,” he said.

The police officer pointed out that no arrests have been made so far but that they are pursuing the gang members.

One Bor resident who preferred to only identified herself as Mary said: “These boys have started again especially in the areas like Block 6 and Block 3. They target ladies. Last week they spared me but my friend was beaten up.”

Bol Deng Bol, a civil society activist, said the gangsters have wreaked havoc in the town.

“No one is comfortable especially in Bor town with these activities of niggers. There are about 26 youth groups. They have been terrorizing the town especially in September,” he said.

The activist, however, applauded the ongoing government crackdown while cautioning the joint operation forces against acting extrajudicially.
