A citizen was shot dead and two others wounded by police forces in Dabab locality in Sudan’s West Kordofan state, an eyewitness said.
The incident took place at El Hawira area, about seven kilometres northwest of Dabab town when citizens seized two water tanks belonging to one of the Chinese oil companies operating in the area.
Local youths held hostage the two company trucks and began making demands and citing grievances including the company’s alleged failure to employ local youths. This prompted a security response.
“The citizens were negotiating with the company asking for employment of about 40 local youths or compensate them so that the two water tanks are released,” he said.
But security forces came and dispersed the citizens using live bullets, killing one person and wounding two others. The person killed was identified as Motwakil Ismail.
Local residents expressed concern at mounting tensions in the area.
