Police in Aweil East block access to feuding trader camps

Police authorities in the proposed state of Aweil East, Northern Bahr el Ghazal, have blocked access to two rival camps competing for Chamber of Commerce office, ending weeks of tensions and fear of possible violent clash.

Anuei Akoon, one of the two main contenders of chamber of commerce office in the state said police authorities acting in collaboration with members of security service have denied them access to the office. Anuei said on Monday he and his group have met an investigation committee dispatched by authorities in Juba to go and find out the differences between the two opposing sides in the area.

“We have just finished talking to the committee today. They spoke to us and tomorrow they will speak to the other group. The committee told us that they want to hear from us and also them before bringing us in one gathering to reconcile our views and see what is what before coming out with conclusion,” explained Anuei.

“We don’t know when they will make their conclusions and what will be the result. I still don’t know. But at least it is good a committee has come and spoke to the people and hear from them.”
