Sudanese police said they found the burned body of the medical director of Omdurman hospital in the riverside city on Wednesday evening.

Police identified the deceased as Dr Abubaker Ali al-Tahir, who lived in the area where he was found. The body was found near the house of Sudan's first president Ismail al-Azhari.

The police did not disclose any other details of the incident.

Separately, police broke up a protest by Omdurman market traders at the national parliament against a new taxation policy and the demolition of some shops.

There were no reports of arrest or injuries among the protesters.
