Police in Bor town of Jonglei State said they have arrested a man for allegedly triggering a fracas during a wrestling match in Bor over the weekend.

Police in Bor town of Jonglei State said they have arrested a man for allegedly triggering a fracas during a wrestling match in Bor over the weekend.

On Sunday evening more than 10 people were injured in a brawl following a misunderstanding that erupted during a wrestling match.

The wrestling contest was between the communities of Gwala and Pathyouth of Bor County.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, the state police spokesperson, Lt. Colonel John Mawut Ngang, said calm was immediately restored after the incident and that one man is being investigated for starting the fight.

“The man who allegedly started the fight is now in our custody and investigations are ongoing. The man was arrested and handed over to us by his own Gwala community,” Lt. Col. Mawut said.

“About 10 people were injured during the incident and they have been receiving treatment at Bor State Hospital. As we speak, the situation is normal. Even youth from the two sides dance together now. The incident was just a minor,” he added.

Dr. Bol Chaw, the medical director of Bor State Hospital, said, “On Sunday night we received and admitted 10 people with wounds. Their condition is normal. We have since discharged them except two who are still being treated for head injuries,” Dr. Bol said.

While emphasizing the importance of sports in peacebuilding, Bol Deng, an activist in Bor, condemned Sunday’s incident as unfortunate and urged the state authorities to often provide security and protection during such events.

Wrestling is the most popular sport among the Dinka community of Jonglei. But the sports event, often held as competition matches between communities, often turns violent.
