Police authorities in Torit County of Eastern Equatoria state on Monday arrested a 19-year-old man for his alleged involvement in the rape of a 16-year-old girl in the wee hours of Saturday morning.
According to the police, the girl was gang-raped by five men, four of whom are still at large.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, the area police spokesperson Maj. Justin Kleopus Takuru said the girl was brought to the police station on Saturday morning and was later taken to the hospital where it was confirmed she had been raped.
“According to the investigations, the girl was at a party. She tried to go for a short call outside the fence at a club in Malakia residential area and was escorted by one of the brothers. However, as she moved farther, she was caught and taken towards the main road, and raped,” he explained.
Kleopus said that investigations and a search for the remaining four suspects are underway.
For his part, the medical director of the Torit state hospital Dr. John Isaac said the girl was released after receiving psychosocial support at the health facility.
