Police arrest suspect in Torit stabbing

The police have arrested a man accused of stabbing his drinking mate to death on Sunday night in Hiyalla Payam of Torit County in South Sudan’s Eastern Equatoria State, officials there said.

The police have arrested a man accused of stabbing his drinking mate to death on Sunday night in Torit County of South Sudan’s Eastern Equatoria State, officials there said.

The 35-year-old man identified as Richard Okoki Ellia died due to stab wounds inflicted on him allegedly by his friend Dafala Olia while drinking alcohol in Haforiere Village.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, Patrick Aiteng, the youth leader for the Haforiere community said, “Okoki Elia, 35, and Dafala Olia were drinking alcohol together when a fight ensued between them. They both stabbed each other with a knife. The incident happened at midnight. The late has already been buried and Dafala was arrested.” 

For his part, Sanabio Tiya, the Chief for Tirangore Boma confirmed that the culprit is in police custody awaiting investigations.

He further said the culprit was beaten unconscious by residents after the incident but that he was improving. 

Tiya called on the government to ensure that justice is served. 

According to authorities in the area, about seven young men have lost their lives in cattle raids, revenge killings, and crime since the year started.
