A 14-year-old boy was killed by a crocodile while fishing at the Akobo River in Pochalla South County, in Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) on Friday, local officials confirmed.

The officials identified the deceased as Ochalla Philip Okwier.

Pochalla South County Commissioner Othow Okoti reported to Radio Tamazuj that the dismembered remains of Ochalla were discovered after a day of searching,

The Commissioner said the family buried the remains the following day.

Okoti said the boy had informed his mother that he was going fishing. While he was at the Akobo River, a crocodile attacked him.

“We began searching on Friday, and it was only the following day that part of his body was found floating on the river,” Okoti said.

He said the incident had shaken the community, noting that it was the first fatal crocodile attack in over 30 years.

“Local crocodiles typically do not attack people. We believe that the crocodile responsible for Ochalla’s death may have been driven closer to the riverbanks by the floods,” he explained.
