A 25-year-old woman was critically injured in a road ambush in Pochalla County, Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA), on Thursday, local officials said.

Owety Olung, the acting county commissioner, told Radio Tamazuj Friday that the woman identified as Abimolo Ojo was among a group of women returning from a wedding ceremony in the county’s Ajienga area when they were ambushed by armed criminals.

“Those criminals ambushed the women while returning to Pochalla town,” she said. “The rest of the women run away but this one woman was captured and beaten into unconsciousness. They were ambushed between Obuodi and Ajienga where they attended a wedding.”

Owety said the injured woman is being treated at a health facility in Pochalla and called for her evacuation to Juba for better medical attention.

“The criminals left her thinking that she was dead. She was later found by local youths who brought her to the town where she is still in critical condition,” she added.

Lt. Col. Amati Ochan, the county police inspector, confirmed the woman was badly beaten by the assailants but that no suspect has been arrested since the incident happened in a bushy area. He speculated that the attackers might have wanted to abduct children from the women.
