Farmers in the border town of Pochalla in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) have appealed for support to boost production amid a shortage of seeds and farming implements.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, several farmers said they expected a better harvest this season but warned that challenges could hinder their progress.
Ojulu Oju emphasized the need for farm tools.
“We cultivate at least twice a year. This season is promising because the rains have been good,” he said. “However, our challenges include a lack of markets and poor roads. Additionally, we lack farm tools and equipment.”
Oju, who is also a Presbyterian priest, stated that with proper support, the community could help feed the country.
“The border town of Pochalla has favorable weather, and farming is central to our community. We have the potential to feed the nation if we receive support,” he added.
Ochalla Nyigwo called for the introduction of modern farming technology.
“We rely on traditional farming methods and local seeds. We appeal for support with modern farm tools and equipment, including tractors. We also need vegetable seeds, as the only seeds we currently have are for maize and dura,” he said.
Pochalla South County Commissioner Othow Okoti confirmed that farmers had raised these concerns with him but said the county lacked the resources to intervene. He echoed calls for support in providing farm tools and equipment.
“The challenges regarding the lack of farm tools and seeds have been brought to our attention, and we have forwarded them to the GPAA leadership,” he stated.
“We lack the resources to address our farmers’ concerns. Therefore, we appeal to our partners to support them with skills, tools, and seeds.”
