Pigi County in Jonglei is facing a severe shortage of life-saving drugs amidst a surge in malaria and pneumonia cases due to the floods.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Ajur Chol, the acting county health director, said: “Since the crisis started, we never received government supplies to the county. Khorfulus and Canal PHCCs (Primary Health Care Centers) have run out of drug supplies. Daily, we get about 50-70 malaria cases, 40 pneumonia, and diarrheal cases but there are no drugs to treat them.”

The health official called on the government and humanitarian health agencies in the country to supply the county with drugs so that they can treat all the cases.

“We appeal to the government and partners to supply us with a PHCC drug kit. What we used to receive in the past is a PHCU kit which lacks injectable drugs,” he said.

For his part, Pigi County Commissioner, Nyok Malual Mayik, also decried the dire health situation and called for urgent intervention.

Pigi County has been hit by the floods since July, displacing hundreds and leaving others in a dire humanitarian situation.
