Pibor braces to tackle looming floods

Preparations are underway to get the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) headquarters, Pibor Town, ready to deal with impending floods, with the Pibor River overflowing and heavy rains anticipated in the coming weeks.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, Oleyo Akwer Nyalus, the GPAA Information minister, said they have built dykes and formed a committee to mitigate the impact of floods.

“We are anticipating heavy floods because the Pibor River is now overflowing and heavy rains are expected,” he stated. “Dykes have been built north and south of Pibor Town to the height of over one meter and a committee is now in place to help evacuate those in the hotspot areas.”

The GPAA government spokesperson said they stepped up proactive flood mitigation measures because Pibor is flood-prone and to mitigate any eventualities in the aftermath of the looming disaster.

“We are doing public awareness that there will be looming floods. Hotspot areas have been marked and everyone is on alert,” he added. “On Monday, a high-level delegation of the national government led by humanitarian affairs minister, Albino Akol, was here to assess our preparedness to tackle the floods. So, we are appealing to all aid agencies to come to aid in this crucial time.”
