A manhunt is on for suspects involved in the killing of two youths during fighting between two rival youth age groups in Pibor town in Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA), authorities said.
Last week, Pibor witnessed days of bloody fighting involving the two rival groups of Kurenen and Buzulei. The fighting left two people dead and another nursing gunshot wounds.
GPAA Information Minister Abraham Kelang told Radio Tamazuj Sunday that the local administration condemned the clashes and said that those involved in the fighting and subsequent killing have been identified, will be apprehended, and face justice.
“As the Murle community, we had a meeting last month involving commissioners, chiefs, youth, and women leaders during which regulations on killing and age-set fighting were set and passed,” Kelang explained. “This particular incident in which two people were killed was gruesome and we condemn it. We intervened by stopping the violence and now a manhunt is ongoing for the murder suspects.”
For his part, GPAA Police Commissioner Maj. Gen. Khamis Marajan confirmed that calm has since been restored in Pibor town after the age-set fighting and that the police are maintaining law and order.
“The situation in Pibor is now calm,” he reported. “However, we have received reports that some people are planning to attack Gurmuk but we are monitoring.”
