Photos: Trucks destroyed in Wau protests

A significant number of long-haul trucks were destroyed during demonstrations last weekend in Wau of Western Bahr el Ghazal. An official told Radio Tamazuj that the protesters also attacked a police camp in the area along the Wau-Tambura road.Radio Tamazuj has yet to contact truck drivers or businessmen affected by the attacks on their trucks. These photos were provided by the state government which commented only that the trucks were burned by protesters on the Wau-Tambura road. More details from interviews with the governor and state minister of information are forthcoming. Eight people were shot and died during the events Saturday and Sunday in Wau and another 24 wounded. The killings followed efforts by youth groups since mid last week to block the main roads leading into Wau, the state capital.The protests were connected to the political and consitutional crisis which struck the state last month over the transferral of Wau County headquarters from Wau to Baggari payam. In a decree issued Sunday, the state governor acknowledged that an operation to clear the roadblocks was ongoing at the time of the shootings. He has ordered an immediate investigation into the killings by an ad hoc committee of state and local officials together with security and police commanders.
