Members of South Sudanese civil society, clergy and the diplomatic community in Juba joined on Tuesday on the second anniversary of the outbreak of civil war to commemorate those who have died in the conflict.

Bishop Paride Taban led participants in lighting candles as a symbol of remembrance for the lives of those lost in the violence.

“They were fathers, brothers, mothers, sisters and children. Each of them cherished by their families and communities,” said civil society group CEPO in a press statement about the event.

Participants were briefed on the launch of the website of Remembering the Ones We Lost, a public memorial that aims to name all victims of conflict and armed violence in South Sudan since 1955.

“This public memorial hopes to memorialize all the victims, bring attention to the shared suffering of South Sudanese, giving additional meaning to cries for peace and be a tool for understanding and reconciliation amongst South Sudanese individuals and communities,” CEPO explained.

“This project is designed for one purpose: to honor the memory of each person who has died or gone missing during conflict in South Sudan,” the website explains.

Citizens are invited to participate by submitting the name of someone who was lost in the conflict or by writing a memorial tribute.
